Getting to Research an Old Topic

May 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

For our recent column assignment, I was struggling for an idea until I remembered an extremely interesting topic I wrote an editorial on in high school.  Since I wasn’t able to explore this topic really well in high school, I was extremely excited to begin researching this interesting, but disturbing topic.

For this topic, I researched the connection between Saudi Arabian textbooks and our gas money.  A topic that took a lot of time to both understand and be able to explain to others, this editorial was an extremely rewarding process that has allowed me to be able to inform both myself and others.  Also, having to use objective information from various sources to help put the important facts together was extremely beneficial to my researching skills.  Due to the complexity of this topic, there were times when I felt like I should start anew and build onto a different topic.  However, I knew that this would be a mistake that would fail to inform  my community about an extremely important issue that is not commonly considered as supporting terrorism.

Articles like this are the reason I got into the subject of journalism and in my lifetime I hope to write many more that I feel  like contribute to the public good.
